Besides voting for our President, U.S. Senator, Congressional Representatives, California State Senate and assembly members, voters will have to make a decision on a long-list of initiatives and a referendum on the November ballot.Your government affairs department (PIC) prepared a list of the proposition number and subject matter of each item and its position on each. Management is all about accountability—yours and the people who work for you. Beware of these behaviors that can undercut your attempt to build a culture of accountability in your workplace:

Tardiness. Everyone is late once or twice, but when you or your employees make it a habit, lateness can take root in your workplace, leading to missed deadlines and wasted time.

Scapegoating. If your first move is to punish mistakes and failures, employees will spend most of the time trying to avoid responsibility instead of solving problems.

Breaking promises. Don't tell employees you'll do something if you don't mean it. If you start making excuses for failure to follow through, they'll do the same.

Deflecting mistakes. If you make a mistake, admit it honestly. Employees won't cease to respect you for not being perfect, but they will pick up on any reluctance to concede an error or cover one up.

Ignoring misbehavior. You expect a certain level of performance and professional behavior from your workforce. If you let some employees get away with substandard work or childish behavior because they're productive in some areas, or you just want to avoid open conflict, you send a message that you don't care what they do on the job. Take corrective action whenever you see behavior that calls for it.

It’s time to recognize great leaders! The Public Relations Committee is looking for nominations for the Executive of the Year/PIASC Ben Franklin Award, which is the highest honor presented in Southern California's printing industry. Past recipients of this award claim that this is indeed one of the highlights of their career. Keeping the significance and prestige of this honor in mind, please take the time to make your choice known.

The PIASC Benjamin Franklin Award honors an individual for being a long-term major contributor to the graphic arts industry in Southern California. Nominees for this award should meet the following criteria:

  • Successful in his or her chosen profession
  • A person of high principles and integrity
  • A person who shares time and talent to work toward the advancement of the printing industry
  • Works for the betterment of society through civic, community, or religious involvements
  • Worked 15 years in the graphic arts industry, with at least five of those years in Southern California.

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) require that all employers, regardless of size, fill out a Form I-9 within 3 business days of hire and retain those forms for every new hire on or after 11.6.86, in the United States as long as the person works for pay or some other type of compensation. The form is used to establish the identity and employment authorization for each new employee regardless of their citizenship status (citizen or non-citizen). Currently, the form has an expiration date of 3.31.16 and is being updated so employers should continue to use the expired form until the new version is released.
