EMPLOYERS MUST POST VOTING NOTICE NO LATER THAN OCTOBER 31ST

The California Elections Code requires employers to post a notice advising employees about taking paid leave to vote in statewide elections. The notice must be posted either in the workplace or where it can be seen by employees as they enter or exit their place of work at least 10 days before a statewide election. The 2016 statewide election is Nov. 8th; therefore, the notice must be posted no later than Oct. 31st. The notice can be found by clicking here.

THE VITALITY OF CALIFORNIA'S PRINTING INDUSTRY

The California printing industry contributes significant value to the state’s economy. A recent study for Printing Industries of California conducted by Printing Industries of America’s Center for Print Economic and Market Research provides important data about the state’s printing industryfor example, the generation of thousands of jobs, creation of significant economic output, and contribution to helping to fund government programs.

Moreover, the printing industry has a strong relationship with other sectors of the economy in California, leading to significant multipliers. For example, for every additional $1 in output, the printing industry generates an additional $1.18 in backward-linked, non-printing industry spending and household spending.

You can view the entire 22 page study, titled California Printing Industry Economic and Fiscal Contribution, by clicking here.

NEW OVERTIME RULES EFFECTIVE DECEMBER 1, 2016

With all the fuss with the new Overtime FLSA rules that go into effect on December 1, 2016, this is a quick rundown on what employers need to know. The new ruling will do the following things:

  1. Raise the salary threshold from $455/week to $913/week (annualized to $47,476.00).
  2. Automatically update the salary threshold every three years.
  3. Strengthen overtime protections for salaried employees.
  4. Amends the salary basis test to allow employers to use nondiscretionary bonuses and incentive payments (including commissions) to satisfy up to 10 percent of the new standard salary level.
  5. No changes to any of the existing job duty requirements to qualify for the exemption.

In preparation, employers can take these steps to assure compliance

  1. Pay time and a half for overtime work (CA. employers be mindful of the daily OT Rule).
  2. Raise their employee’s salaries to above the new threshold.
  3. Limit employee’s work time to only 40 hours a week.
  4. A combination of some of these methods.

Bottom line is this: Don’t get caught placing your employees on a salary just to make things convenient. The DOL has hired additional personnel to conduct audits and you don’t want to be made an example. For more information, click on this factsheet.

WORKERS EXPECT WORK ITSELF TO CHANGE

The traditional eight-hour workday may soon be a thing of the past. At least that’s the opinion of 63 percent of workers in a PwC survey of 1,400 people. Among the changes, they foresee:

  • Sixty-eight percent expect to be working remotely instead of going to an office every day.
  • More than three-fourths anticipate being responsible for their own health care and other benefits.
  • More than 50 percent currently working at a traditional job think they’ll be working for themselves within five years.
  • Approximately 40 percent, though, feel insecure about their finances if they become self-employed.
  • Older workers are more inclined to be their own bosses. Sixty-five percent agree strongly with the statement, “I have a strong desire to work independently.” But only 29 percent of workers 25 or under feel the same.
