LITHOGRAPHIX, INC. HOSTS 30TH ANNUAL RAISE FOUNDATION SURPLUS DRIVE

PIASC members’ generosity has kept the annual surplus drive alive for 30 years! Each year it's around this time when we ask members to put aside any surplus paper and office supplies to continue this fabulous program. It is thanks to you, our members, that our graphic arts teachers are able to continue their programs and training our future workforce. Your donations supplement their almost non-existent budgets; therefore, thanks to your generous contribution, graphic arts students are able to print their projects on beautiful paper that otherwise, they would not be able to afford.

Participating is easy!

  1. Place your donations on a pallet and shrink wrap it. Give it an estimated value.
  2. Deliver your donations to Lithographix, Inc. on Thursday or Friday January 19 or 20, 2017, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
  3. Staff will mail a donation letter the following week so it’s important to provide us with the estimated value of your donation.

Then on Saturday, January 21, 2017, PIASC staff and Lithographix staff will meet teachers, starting at 8:30 a.m. At 9:00 a.m., the distribution of paper begins. Last year, for example, graphic arts teachers from 48 schools participated in the event. They came ready with pickup trucks, vans, and SUVs as well as one or two students, to take advantage of the many pallets of papers donated by PIASC member companies.

The annual surplus drive is a celebration, so to speak. Teachers are greeted with coffee, donuts, and assorted fruit as they examine the more than 100 pallets of paper and wait anxiously for the giveaway to begin. Schools take turns in getting paper, and rotate between each other until all the paper is gone. This can take up to an hour or more. Before all the paper is distributed, the host company—this year Lithographix, Inc.—will invite participants for a plant tour of their operation. Besides obtaining much needed paper, the plant tour is the highlight of the day.

Please contact Ara Izquierdo at 323.728.9500 for any questions or concerns regarding the surplus drive. You may also click here to download detailed information and driving directions to Lithographix, Inc.

IT'S TIME TO ORDER YOUR 2017 LABOR LAW POSTERS NOW!

All California businesses must display up-to-date labor and safety notices where all employees can see them to be in compliance with federal and state laws.

The 2016 all-in-one poster does not meet the federal and state 2017 requirements. Updated posters include the following important revisions:

  • CA Minimum Wage Notice
  • FED Minimum Wage and Employee Polygraph Protection Act
  • FED Pregnancy Leave

Companies will also have to update their Industrial Welfare Commission Wage Order (#1 Manufacturing or #4 Administrative) given the new state minimum wage increases.

Some companies may also be required to display additional notices depending on their operation, such as forklift safety, fire extinguisher use, safe lifting, and bloodborne pathogens.

You can pre-order posters from PIASC at the same rate as in previous years. For example, the cost for the 2017 all-in-one poster and Wage Order is $24.50 each, which includes postage and sales tax. Since you’ll need both posters, we are offering a combination package for the reduced price of $45.00

To pre-order your 2017 All-in-One poster and Wage Order, contact Emily Holguin at 323.728.9500, ext. 262. If you have any other questions about the posters, contact Gerry Bonetto, at ext. 248.

PIASC STAFF DELIVERED CHRISTMAS GIFTS TO THE CHILDREN OF CITY OF HOPE DONATED BY MEMBERS ATTENDING THE RECENT HOLIDAY PARTY

PIASC staff members Gerry Bonetto (left) and Ara Izquierdo (far right) had the pleasure of delivering to City of Hope the Christmas toys that were collected during the recent Holiday Party at The Hotel Fullerton. Over 50 members enjoyed an evening of networking, good food, but most importantly, good feeling knowing that their participation in the event would benefit two worthy causes: the children of City of Hope, and our graphic arts youth!

We express our most sincere thanks for making the annual Holiday Party such a special event. The children of City of Hope thank you and our graphic arts youth also thank you!

KEEP IDEAS FLOWING BY EXPLORING WHY THEY STOP

Ideas are crucial to innovation and growth, but many employees choose to keep their ideas to themselves. Why? One of the most common, and most easily remedied, reasons is proximity. Studies have found that employees are extremely unlikely to share information with co-workers who sit more than 30 feet away from their workstations. As long as employees are in the same building, a little rearranging of work areas or frequent meetings can solve that problem.

More troubling are the psychological reasons behind a failure to share knowledge:

Fear of rejection. Many people worry that their contributions to discussions or projects will be dismissed, so they keep their ideas to themselves.

Fear of exposing ignorance. Often, people are insecure about their knowledge and keep their mouths shut for fear they may be embarrassed in front of co-workers.

Fear of theft. Good ideas are a hot commodity in today’s economy, and some people worry that if they share their ideas, others will steal them.

The first two fears are usually a matter of office culture, meaning that change must come from the top down. To overcome fear of rejection and fear of ignorance, managers should cultivate an atmosphere where all opinions are respected and a premium is placed on helping employees learn. Managers at all levels should also be willing to answer questions and unwilling to tolerate employees who disparage the ideas or questions of others.

The fear of having ideas stolen is more difficult to address. It is the reason that many organizations report difficulty in getting employees to participate in knowledge management systems. Some organizations have achieved success by including the sharing of information and ideas in the annual review process and linking such behavior to raises and rewards.
