CAREERS IN GRAPHIC COMMUNICATIONS

In an effort to recruit young people into the graphic arts industry, the Print and Graphics Scholarship Foundation (PGSF) released a freshly designed career poster. The new 17 x 22-inch poster provides updated statistics on the industry in an attractive and eye-catching manner. The poster was distributed throughout the United States, primarily to high schools, technical schools, and community colleges. Printing companies and industry vendors who would like to participate in distributing copies of the poster should contact Bernie Eckert at beckert@printing.org. Check out what the poster looks like by viewing it here.

PGSF also published Careers in Graphic Communications booklet, which you can obtain by contacting Ara Izquierdo at 323.728.9500, ext. 216.

MARCH BREAKFASTS WITH BOB: YOUR DIGITAL FUTURE

It's hard to find a firm that doesn't have digital output capability. It's also hard to find one who's digital business isn't growing, although usually still smaller than offset. It's clear that in most cases digital has a role, frequently a key one, in the future of the firm.

This month we'll share experiences to date—toner or ink jet, VDP or short run, page units or large format, banners, posters and everything else.

What are the problems? Which manufacturers do we like? What about supplies and service? Are we buying or leasing and where do click charges fit in?

The first Breakfast with Bob in this series is scheduled for March 22nd, at 7:30 a.m. at Mimi’s Café, 10909 Foothill Blvd. in Rancho Cucamonga. Click here for other dates and locations.

PROBE BEYOND THE OBVIOUS WHEN HIRING FOR CUSTOMER SERVICE

When you’re hiring customer service reps, extracurricular activities may tell you more about their motivation than their job history. Why? Because for some people, service is more than a job function—it’s a lifestyle. If you want people who’ll gladly serve your customers, look for those who have a history of volunteering. Your best bets will be the ones who can demonstrate a history of lending a helping hand.

PIASC CELEBRATES READING MONTH BY DISTRIBUTING OVER 40,000 BOOKMARKS TO ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TEACHERS

PIASC staff was bombarded by calls and emails from teachers belonging to a Google Group when they were alerted by a librarian that PIASC/RAISE distributed free bookmarks. Fortunately, we had a surplus of bookmarks for the last 11 years so we were able to supply the demand.

The design for most of the bookmarks comes from a student college competition conducted by PIASC each year. Our annual mailing list consists of 296 public libraries and now adding 69 schools that want to receive these colorful and magical bookmarks. A total of 135,000 bookmarks were mailed to libraries and schools this year and all bookmarks carry the following message: READ, READ, READ, the more you read, the more you know; and the more you know, the smarter you grow!

Visit PIASC’s Educational Foundation— RAISE—to become familiar with all its activities and get involved by becoming an advisory member at your local school or college and opening your doors to students for plant tours. Contact Ara Izquierdo if you would like to receive a listing of the schools with graphic arts programs in your community.
