Dear Member, here is your weekly e-flash!

JOIN YOUR PEERS AND SALUTE THE WINNERS OF THE PRINT EXCELLENCE AWARDS COMPETITION AT THE INDUSTRY'S EVENT OF THE YEAR!

This year’s competition was fierce! Over 300 entries were judged by experts in the printing industry and the winners were selected. The winners will be presented with their respective awards at this year’s Graphics Night on Friday, April 8, 2015. The event will take place at the beautiful Pacific Palms Resort located on a glorious hilltop in the center of Southern California.

We encourage you to invite key employees, clients, and family to the most important industry event of the year where we will celebrate our industry—the printing industry! Festivities begin at 5:30 pm with a wine and hors d’oeuvres reception while relaxing to the tunes of soft jazz. During the reception, the Print Excellence Awards winning entries will be on exhibit for you to admire and select your favorite piece that you believe should win the “People’s Choice” award. Then at 7:00 pm you will be invited to enter the Majestic Ballroom to enjoy a fabulous dinner followed by the introduction of the PIASC 2016 Executive of the Year and the presentation of the winners of the Print Excellence Awards. And to close a perfect evening, dance the night away with Beverly Hills DJ, playing the tunes that you enjoy!

LET’S CELEBRATE PRINT POWER! Make your reservations now by contacting Maribel Campos or by simply clicking here. Tickets are valued at $250.00; however, thanks to our sponsors, we are able to offer them to you for only $100.00. Buy a table of 8, 10, or 12 and enjoy an evening of networking, good music, good food and spirits, and lots of fun! Where else can you get all this for only $100.00 per person? NEW FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT TOOL FOR PRINTERS

PIA's Center for Print Economics and Management has developed a new program for printers to assess their strengths and weaknesses and to obtain an action plan to improve their bottom-line performance.

The key features of the new Financial Performance Assessment include a detailed comparison and analysis of the printer's key performance metrics with profit leaders that are similar in size, business models, and printing processes; a comprehensive variance analysis examining the underlying reasons for performance issues; and an action plan with recommendations for specific strategic management practices and operational improvements, such as lowering costs, saving resources, reviewing prices, and other actions to stop losses and increase sales and profits.

The findings are presented in both a detailed report to management plus a Web-based presentation to the printer's management team. The program also includes on-going assistance and consultation as needed to help in implementation of the action plan.

For more information or to schedule a Financial Performance Assessment, contact Dr. Ron Davis at rdavis@printing.org or 800.910.4283 (ext. 502).

MORE REASONS TO CHOOSE PRINT

Check out the latest “Talking Points” on the home page at the www.ChoosePrint.org website, which include these facts:

  • Print serves as a special occasion for some luxury brands.
  • When direct mail arrives, your recipient must at least touch it.
  • Claims like “go paperless-save trees” create a false impression.

Knowledge is power! Share this information with your employees and help them be prepared!

DON'T WASTE TIME ON THE CLOSED DOORS

The best sales people are particularly adept at getting past the “gate keepers” who stand in their way. If one door closes, they try another. Marketing can be the same way. If, for example, a particular campaign fails, learn from it and then try something else (i.e. try a “different door”).

IDENTIFY SUCCESS FACTORS BEFORE YOU INTERVIEW

To hire the best people, you need to know what you’re looking for in advance of the first interview. Quiz your staff to determine what behaviors and attitudes a new hire needs in order to do the job well and fit into your organization’s culture. When you have these nailed down, share them with other managers, employees, and additional stakeholders to gain consensus. Use these success factors to design job interview questions that will help you spot the people you want to hire.

IT'S JUST NOT WORKING OUT: A LIST OF SENSIBLE WAYS TO CORRECTLY AND HUMANELY SEPARATE FROM AN EMPLOYEE

In the litigious state of California, it is incumbent that employers have some idea of how to make a separation go as well as expected despite the unpleasantness. This is part and parcel of what business owners or employers have to face in order to run a business smoothly, to stay afloat and make profits.

  1. Decision to terminate. There has to be a clear cut, unbiased and non-discriminatory reason as to why the employee has to be removed from the position. Don’t mask reasons of separation or lie to the employee. Be honest and do it with empathy. No one likes to hear the words, “You’re fired”. Instead, be clear and concise and state your case and keep it as short and simple as possible.

  2. Even if the separation is justified, do your groundwork before you move ahead with the termination. Ensure that the personnel file/folder has been inspected for any documentation of poor performance, personnel reviews, attendance, leaves of absences, etc. to avoid any concerns for a wrongful termination. California may be an at-will state, however, we have seen rising claims for smaller violations and attorneys who represent employees get more aggressive in their pursuit of cases. >>READ MORE
