BASE YOUR COMMUNICATION ON THE LETTER C'

How well you communicate with your employees and co-workers can make or break your career. Fortunately, communication doesn’t have to be difficult as long as you keep it simple. When speaking or writing, keep these points in mind:

  • Courtesy. Mom was right—being nice to people is important. It’s also useful in your daily interactions with them. Being courteous lets people know you care, and it doesn’t take a lot of effort. A simple “please” or “thank you” can go a long way toward building positive relationships.

  • Cooperation. Need something done? Ask for help, don’t demand it. People are often happy to help, but resent being commanded to do it. At the same time, be ready to help other people. They’ll be more inclined to reciprocate when you need assistance if you’ve shown you’re a team player.

  • Consistency. Keep your nonverbal communication in sync with your language. For instance, if you tell someone that they have a great idea, make sure that the tone of your voice and the look on your face express some enthusiasm. Otherwise your words will sound insincere.

  • Clarity. Never hesitate to ask people if they understand what you said or what you want. Ask them if they have any questions, or have them repeat back your instructions. Confirming that they understand can avoid problems later.
