IS YOUR EMPLOYEE HANDBOOK UP-TO-DATE?

When a new year rolls in, one very practical and essential annual business practice is to ensure that your employee handbook is up-to-date with all the relevant policies and procedures. Employers must expect statutory changes and 2017 is no different, especially in California. Having an outdated handbook is a very big liability as well as having no handbook at all.

While a handbook is not a bullet proof way to not get sued, a well written and updated handbook may very well be the written documentation to assist you in times when the need arises. The rules governed in the handbook have to be fair, uniformly applied and executed and applied with the correct information, and this can be a way to demonstrate fair and accurate practices of the company.

After a handbook is updated, it should be distributed promptly as well as the collection of signatures acknowledging receipt of the changes and updates. Ideally, a meeting explaining the changes would be helpful, if that is not practical, perhaps a brief memo outlining some of the changes. Employees are more likely to embrace changes if they feel the employer is not attempting to hide information, however minor or pertinent.

As a member of PIASC, employers have access to a complimentary sample employee handbook that has been written by an attorney in the industry. This sample handbook is updated annually at the beginning of the year and is available for download under Sample Handbook section of the Human Resources part of the Graphic Arts Industry Resource Center. Member login is required.

For questions about the handbook or for assistance in reviewing the policies and procedures for your company handbook, contact Cheryl at 323.728.9500 x 218 or cheryl@piasc.org.

SCAM CALLS CONTINUE; IRS IDENTIFIES FIVE EASY WAYS TO SPOT SUSPICIOUS CALLS

The IRS reminds people that they can know pretty easily when a supposed IRS caller is a fake. Here are five things the scammers often do but the IRS will not do. Any one of these five things is a tell-tale sign of a scam. The IRS will never:

  1. Call to demand immediate payment, nor will we call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill.

  2. Demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe.

  3. Require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card.

  4. Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.

  5. Threaten to bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying.

Additional information about tax scams are available on IRS social media sites, including YouTube and Tumblr where people can search “scam” to find all the scam-related posts. Click here for more information.

WHAT NOT TO ASK FEMALE JOB CANDIDATES

Here are 10 interview questions that a hiring manager should never ask a female job seeker:

  1. What are your plans for marriage?
  2. What are your childbearing plans?
  3. What arrangements can you make for your children during work hours?
  4. Would you be inconvenienced by night work?
  5. Would you be inconvenienced by travel?
  6. How do you feel about supervising men?
  7. Is your husband likely to be transferred to another location within his company?
  8. What would you do if your husband were transferred?
  9. Do you think you can leave your family issues at home and concentrate on the job?
  10. Can you sell as aggressively as a man?

Remember: Ask questions that center on one issue: Are you qualified to perform the essential functions of the job you are seeking?

ASK THE TECHNICAL EXPERTS!

One of the benefits of membership is the technical expertise provided by Printing Industries of America. Our technical experts from the Center for Technology and Research discuss common production problems and issues. The Center for Technology and Research helps members with environmental, health, and safety concerns; consulting and on-site technical assistance.

Here’s the type of questions for which you can get answers:

Q. Does the shape of a halftone dot affect the amount of dot gain exhibited in a printed screen?

A. The answer is yes, the greater the perimeter of a dot, the more dot gain it will exhibit. Square dots will exhibit the most gain, and the square screens have a bump or jump when the corners touch in the midtone. Most printers avoid square dots unless they are attempting special effects. Round dots exhibit the least gain and are the least sensitive to slurring, which is why they are very popular with web printers and packaging printers. Elliptical dots produce smooth midtones and smooth flesh tones, but have problems with shadows. Most RIPs use some type of Euclidean dot, which is a digital hybrid screen that often uses round dots in the highlight and shadow areas and elliptical dots in the midtone. The Euclidean screen is considered to provide the best attributes of the various dot shapes. Stochastic screens composed of very small dots or spots typically exhibit significant dot gain due the large number of spots that replace larger, conventional screen dots.
