Dear Member, here is your weekly e-flash!

PIASC Graphics Night is the event that you don’t want to miss. An event that celebrates YOU—our members—by showing off the amazing work that you produce and rewarding you for doing what you love most… PRINT!

So set aside Friday, April 7, 2017, and bring the people that help make your company successful: your employees, clients, friends, and family. You will enjoy an evening of beautiful print, fun, networking, good food, awards, and dancing! Reserve your table of 8, 10, or 12 now for this fabulous industry event.

The festivities will begin at 5:30 pm at the beautiful Pacific Palms Resort’s lounge with a wine reception and an exhibit of the Print Excellence Competition winners. Guests can stroll down the exhibit and admire the breathtaking pieces created by you, and your peers, while enjoying delicious hors d’oeuvres, wine, friends and the melodic sounds of soft jazz. Sounds good so far? Then, at 7:00 p.m., guests will enter the Majestic Ballroom for a delicious dinner, an amazing program, and dancing until midnight.

It is thanks to our sponsors that we can offer this fabulous program for only $100 per person but with a value of $200.00. Moreover, if you buy a table of 8, 10, or 12, you will save an additional 10% but you must reserve before March 10th.

We encourage members to participate in the Print Excellence Awards Competition by submitting their best pieces, created in 2016, to PIASC by February 17, 2017. Entries will be judged by industry experts and the winners will be presented with their awards at Graphics Night. If you have any questions, contact Kristy Villanueva at 323.728.9500, ext. 215. Michael Makin, President of Printing Industries of America, announced that the Print & Graphics Scholarship Foundation (PGSF) partnered with Amazon with an easy-to-use way for customers to support the education of tomorrow’s print workforce. Users of Amazon who sign up under the PGSF name in the AmazonSmile program allow Amazon to donate 0.5% of the price of all purchases to PGSF. It is a very easy and effective way to make donations to the Foundation. We encourage members to sign up and share this information with our employees, family and friends.

Most companies do performance reviews. However, over half of employees say such reviews are inaccurate. Why? Managers tend to focus only on what’s happened recently, rather than taking a holistic look at performance. David Niu, CEO of TINYpulse, offers these tips on how to approach your performance review procedure.

Make them more frequent. The single biggest problem with performance reviews is that they typically occur once a year, thereby attempting to tackle too much at one time.

Strive to be objective. Structure performance reviews around specific, measurable metrics. The more you can tie a review to data, the better, whether the focus is sales figures, website hits or recruited clients.

Be balanced. A performance review that focuses on praise and contains a couple of well-defined criticisms will help you achieve a balance.

Be goal-oriented. Any criticism should be offered in the spirit of improvement. Work with the employee to devise a plan on how to improve aspects of his or her performance, then check in later to see if the plan is working. Think of your role as that of a coach or mentor.

Be predictable. Nobody wants to be surprised in a performance review. If you’ve set clear expectations for employees, they won’t be surprised when you sit down for a conversation. Another way to avoid surprises is to set a brief agenda ahead of time.
