Dear Member, here is your weekly e-flash!

IT WAS A NIGHT TO REMEMBER…

Over 300 industry members converged at the beautiful Pacific Palms Resort in Industry Hills to celebrate the multi-faceted beauty of print. Guests started arriving at 5:30 p.m. to enjoy a cocktail reception and the exhibit of outstanding printed pieces produced by PIASC's members. During the exhibit, guests were encouraged to vote for the "People's Choice Award," which would be presented later that evening.

Around 7:00 pm, guests were invited to enter the Majestic Ballroom for dinner and the presentation of awards. The ballroom was filled with lighting elements, city skylines, clean modern table designs and an inviting dance floor with lounge seating; royal blue up lighting surrounded the whole perimeter of the ballroom, bringing the city skyline on the stage to life.

Rob Miller, PIASC Chairman of the Board welcomed guests and thanked them for their participation. He acknowledged Bob Lindgren’s decades of service to the association and his contribution to the success of PIASC. He concluded his remarks by encouraging members to continue to support PIASC because the stronger the association, the better programs and services it can offer  members.

After dinner, Bob Lindgren, outgoing PIASC President, summarized his 60 year career in the printing industry and introduced the Association's incoming president, Lou Caron, who he said, is a CPA and has experience in the industry. Lou thanked PIASC for the opportunity and said that his goal is the ongoing success of the Association.

Next came the awards ceremony and the introduction of PIASC’s Executive of the Year, Marina Poropat Joyce, who graciously accepted the Ben Franklin Award as well as commendations from a number of public officials, including U.S. Senator Diane Feinstein. Marina invited Mark Barbour, Curator for the International Printing Museum, to come forward to receive a special gift to its new educational program, The Book Arts Patch Day for Girls, which introduces girls to the graphic arts. The presentation of the Print Excellence Awards was next. Rob Miller, Chairman of the Board, assisted Janet Green, Public Relations Chair, presenting the awards to the winning companies.

BUILD A RELATIONSHIP OF TRUST WITH YOUR WORKFORCE

You can’t motivate employees if they don’t trust you. Building trust takes time, but it pays off in increased engagement and productivity. Concentrate on these tasks every day to win employees’ confidence:

  • Tell the truth. Be honest in your dealings with employees, customers, and colleagues. This doesn’t mean being rude, or spilling secrets, but sharing news, the bad as well as the good, in a timely fashion.
  • Don’t be a know-it-all. You don’t have to have all the answers, and pretending you do will generally backfire. When you need more information, say so (and get it).
  • Be friendly, not aloof. Don’t let your job title get in the way of your role. Listen to your employees; find out what they think, what they enjoy, and what they want to do; don’t try to intimidate them.
  • Support your people. Do your best to get them the resources they need. Don’t punish honest mistakes, but take steps to ensure they don’t happen again. Encourage employees to give you their best efforts, and praise them for results and effort.
  • Combine consideration with results. Don’t let your pursuit of the organization’s goals trample employees’ feelings. Yes, you may need to give employees a push sometimes, but don’t abuse or bully people who are trying to do their best for you.

REVIEW I-9 POLICIES IN LIGHT OF NEW FORM, MORE ENFORCEMENT

Many employers aren’t aware they should be using a new version of the Employment Eligibility Verification (I-9) Form. Using the old edition could trigger fines. Plus, the feds tripled the number of workplace investigations related to I-9s. Click here to download form.
