Dear Member, here is your weekly e-flash!

LOUIS J. CARON
NEW PRESIDENT/CEO

“I look forward to speaking with our members to make sure we continue providing the services and benefits they value.”

PIASC AND THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS WELCOME LOU CARON AS PRESIDENT/CEO

On June 1st, Louis "Lou" J. Caron officially became PIASC’s 3rd President/CEO. PIASC first began with Henry Henneberg in 1947 followed by Bob Lindgren in 1982 and now Lou, who is devoted to making PIASC the finest print industry association in the country. Lou is a CPA with extensive business experience in both the insurance and printing industry, and has served as the chief financial officer of companies in both industries.

Lou was born as the oldest of five in Seattle, Washington and moved to California in 1967. He graduated from Claremont McKenna College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics/Accounting and Mathematics. Following college, he started his career with Ernst & Young, LLP in Los Angeles where he stayed for 12 years. Since then, he has worked in finance/operations in the insurance, technology, and printing industries. He joined PIASC in May of 2016 and has been a key player in the launch of Private Choice, which is an extension of our health insurance service for the non-printer world. Lou and his wife Mary have three adult children, and he is interested in U.S. Masters Swimming, golf and running.

Fun fact: Lou was a NCAA Division III All American in seven swimming events.

We invite and encourage you to contact Lou to welcome him or share what you would like us to accomplish and to let him know if/where we are falling short. You can reach him at 323.728.9500 Ext. 274, or lou@piasc.org.

LOOKING FOR COMPENSATION DATA?

Have you recently read an article or had a discussion with a business associate regarding company policies and benefits? As you consider the need to modify or add a policy, you may think, “What is everyone else doing?” The information is not easy to gather, but PIASC can provide a solution: our annual Wage & Benefit Survey.

Here are some interesting factoids from last year’s survey:

  • 88% of the firm surveyed in 2016 had written policy manuals.
  • 74% of surveyed firms have a “drug free” policy, but only 57% conduct drug testing in any form. 27% of firms with less than 25 employees test for drugs, while 92% of firms with more than 150 employees test.
  • In 2016, 9% of the surveyed firms did not provide paid health insurance to their employees compared to less than 3% in 2012.
  • The average wage increase was 2.9% for firms providing increases. Over 70% of the firms surveyed provided a wage increase in 2016.

How can you access this type of information? The easiest way is to participate! Beginning this month, survey questionnaires will be sent to members. The cost to participate is ZERO and the survey results (published in the fall) are FREE to participating companies!

If you do not participate you can still obtain a copy in the fall for $250 to members ($500 non-member cost). If you would like to make sure you receive your copy of the questionnaire, contact Cheryl Chong at cheryl@piasc.org 323.728.9500 x218.

ARE YOU PREPARED FOR AN EMERGENCY? BE IN COMPLIANCE!

Did you know that more than 350,000 emergency medical services assessed out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur in the United States? Unfortunately, most people who suffer a cardiac arrest outside of a hospital do not get cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) from a bystander, which significantly lessens their chances of survival.

One of the most valuable skills a person can learn is the life-saving technique, CPR. In addition, you want to make sure your business is in compliance with Cal/OSHA Safety Order section 3400 which states: "In the absence of an infirmary, clinic, or hospital, in near proximity to the workplace, which is used for the treatment of all injured employees, a person or persons shall be adequately trained to render first aid."

PIASC, through Occupational Safety Training Systems, is offering a four hour seminar in First Aid and CPR and with one hour seminar in blood borne pathogens. Cost is only $60/per person for members.

Due to high demand, we have added an additional date for Friday, June 23rd at the PIASC Training Center. Space is limited so register your employees now.

IMPROVE YOUR TIME MANAGEMENT SKILLS

Do you often feel stressed out with too much of workload? As time passes by, do you feel like you have more tasks on hand than you have time to do them or you could have effectively used your time to complete all the given tasks?

The trick is to organize your tasks and use your time effectively to get more things done each day. This can help you to reduce stress and perform better in the workplace. Time management is a skill that takes time to develop and is different for each person. You just need to find what works best for you. Use a few strategies listed below for few weeks and see if it can help you.

10 ways that you can use to improve your time management skills and increase productivity.

  1. Delegate Tasks: It is common for all of us to take more tasks than our desired potential. This can often result in stress and burnout. Delegation is not running away from your responsibilities, but is an important function of management. Learn the art of delegating work to your subordinates as per their skills and abilities.
