Dear Member, here is your weekly e-flash!

FELLOW PRINTERS MARCHED TOGETHER IN CAPITOL HILL!

On June 20th and 21st, 50 industry peers visited Capitol Hill as part of the Print & Packaging Legislative Summit to lobby on timely issues like tax reform, postal stabilization, smarter regulation, workforce development and more. Over 70 meetings were scheduled within 7 hours, and PIASC members like Superior Graphic Printing, Digital Printing Systems, Inc., and The Castle Press took our advocacy messages directly to the White House, Senate and House.

It’s understandable that not everyone could take time away from their businesses to be in Washington, DC, but you can still help amplify print's message at this very moment - by marching with us in support of PrintPAC. Making a contribution at www.printpaconline.org would be a huge help to the lobbying efforts put forth by your peers. We are encouraging every company owner, CEO and/or President of a member company to join our Congressional Club TODAY - by pledging just $84 per month to PrintPAC.

Already, 30 of your peers have made this investment in the industry in the first quarter of 2017. Will you join them? If just 70 more of us come together this week, we will have raised $100,000 for the industry by the end of Q2. This will go a long way to building political relationships in a pivotal legislative year.

Please join PrintPAC by making your $84 per month contribution (or whatever amount you can donate) today!

To make a one-time or recurring contribution at CLICK HERE, and use the User Name and Password "printpac". For additional questions or technical assistance, please contact Printing Industries of America at 1.800.910.4283 or membercentral@printing.org.

WORKING IN GROUPS: HOW TO BE AN EFFECTIVE MEMBER OF A WORK TEAM!

Follow these tips from Randy Pausch of the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University:

  • Meet people properly. If you’re working with people you don’t already know, introduce yourself and your department. Exchange phone numbers.
  • Find things you have in common. "Starting from that baseline," says Pausch, “it’s much easier to then address issues where you have differences.”
  • Check your ego at the door. Think “we” and “us,” not “I” and “me.” You’re part of a team now.
  • Let everyone talk—even if you disagree with what another person is saying.
  • Praise one another. “Focus on the good, praise it, and then raise any objections or concerns you have about the rest of it.”
  • Put it in writing. Write down who is responsible for what, and by when.
  • Be open and honest. Talk to other members of the group if there’s a problem.
  • Avoid conflict. “When stress occurs and tempers flare,” suggests Pausch, “take a short break. Clear your heads, apologize, and take another stab at it.”
  • Phrase alternatives as questions. “Instead of ‘I think we should do A, not B,’ try ‘What if we did A, instead of B?’ That allows people to offer comments rather than defend one choice.”

CHANGING PRINT INDUSTRY

Printing Industries of America’s Center for Print Economics and Management released a report by Dr. Ronnie H. Davis, Senior Vice President and Chief Economist on the changing structure of the printing industry and its national and state trends from 2004 – 2015.

The one constant in the printing industry is change in technology, in products and services, and in the economic and competitive structure of the industry. Economists typically focus on the number and size of firms when discussing the industry’s competitive structure.

What has traditionally been referred to as the printing industry includes many segments: general commercial printing, quick printing, digital imaging, magazines, newspapers, book and display graphics, financial and legal printing, screen printing, forms printing, label and tag printing, packaging, greeting cards, and trade and finishing services. (These are encompassed by NAICS code group 323.)

In this special report they:

  • examine trends in printing industry structure—establishments and employment in particular—over the 2004–2015 time period;
  • discuss the outlook for future structural changes; and
  • provide a competitive scan through trend analysis at the state level.
