Ask Jinji HR: Conduct exit interviews?

Questions

Should we conduct exit interviews?

 Answer by the HR Experts:

In most cases, yes. Exit interviews can provide valuable insight into why employees leave and help identify trends related to management, compensation, workload, training, or workplace culture. Their purpose is to gather honest feedback that can improve the employee experience, strengthen retention efforts, and address concerns before they develop into larger workplace issues or even potential legal claims. They also provide an opportunity to answer final questions, remind employees of any continuing obligations (such as confidentiality, if applicable), and end the employment relationship on a professional note.

That said, exit interviews may not always be appropriate. If there is an active legal case or a situation where emotions are running high, an exit interview may provide little value. The key is to conduct exit interviews consistently, document feedback, and most importantly, use the information to make meaningful improvements.
