NEW YEAR, NEW MILEAGE RATES

The Internal Revenue Service recently issued the 2016 optional standard mileage rates used to calculate the deductible costs of operating an automobile for business, charitable, medical or moving purposes. Both the business and medical or moving purposes rates have been reduced to 54 cents and 19 cents per mile, respectively. These are the lowest allowances since 2011. Presumably these rates are based on fixed and variable operating costs. Taxpayers do, however, have the option of calculating the actual costs of using their vehicle rather than using the standard mileage rates. This would be a good year to keep good records. SALES AGREEMENTS

The California Labor Code requires that a commissioned sales rep receive a written compensation agreement. This document can be changed by the employer prospectively but it’s binding with respect to sales already made. It’s really a good idea as confusion about the compensation causes needless ill will. IS YOUR EMPLOYEE HANDBOOK UP TO DATE?

Many new laws have been implemented and continue to be introduced in California since last year. And one way to protect yourself and your organization is to have an updated employee handbook. An outdated employment handbook can be a hazardclaims waiting to happen. However one that is updated annually is an invaluable tool to assist with organizational growth and needs.

Members are encouraged to keep their employee handbook current as it is usually your first line of defense against employee claims. As a member, you have at your fingertips, a sample handbook that is free for you to download and review at the Graphic Arts Resource Center in Human Resources under the Sample Handbook tab, as well as many other sample documents and templates at no cost.
