Dear Member, here is your weekly e-flash!

CHECK OUT THESE FACTS…

  • It takes a great deal of energy to make the laptops, tablets and smart phones that consumers use to access digital communication.1

  • In 2013 U.S. data centers consumed an estimated 91 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, equivalent to the annual output of 34 large (500-megawatt) coal-fired power plants.2

  • Information and communication technologies, including computer and peripheral equipment, telecommunication equipment and networks, and data centers, account for 1.7% of global carbon dioxide emissions.3

  • The global print and paper industry accounts for only 1% of global carbon dioxide emissions.4

By now, you’ve received five of the six series self-mailers. The #6 you'll receive by next week. Each self-mailer addresses negative comments that potential clients may make about the environmental credentials and marketing effectiveness of ink on paper. The self-mailers, which are also available at 17x22” for download and printing here, provides you with factual responses to such comments. We strongly suggest downloading and printing these posters and displaying them at your place of business for your employees and clients to read.

DISTRACTED DRIVING KILLS!

April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. Everyone has heard the term “Don’t drink and drive”. How about don’t text and drive? Now that technology has permeated our lives especially in the workplace, we need to be aware of the dangers of texting while driving. California’s laws require using hand’s free equipment while using a phone—ignoring that is illegal. It can also kill or cause you and others great harm. For more information, go to OSHA’s website for their distracted driving initiative as well as their distracted driving: no texting brochure.

IS YOUR COMPANY A BEST WORKPLACE?

Find out by entering the Best Workplace in the Americas competition now by submitting the entry form by September 20, 2016.

Printers across the country consistently rank recruiting and retaining qualified employees as one of their key challenges. Although the problem may seem daunting, the answer is really very simple—maintain a successful workforce by providing them a superior work environment.

While all employees have different values when it comes to what they want in a work environment, there is quite a bit of common ground. And, it is not all centered around money. Workers today look for a variety of qualities in a workplace. Eight key human relation areas that employees look at when evaluating a current or prospective workplace are the following:

  1. Management Practices
  2. Work Environment
  3. Training and Development Opportunities
  4. Financial Security
  5. Work-Life Balance
  6. Recognition and Rewards
  7. Health and Wellness Programs
  8. Workplace Health and Safety

The Best Workplace in the Americas Awards evaluates your company’s success in these eight human relations areas. Click here for more information.

LEAD YOUR TEAM ON THE PATH TO INNOVATION

When you’re leading a team focused on innovation, you want to spark creative thinking in every member.

Try these strategies used by successful leaders in every industry:

  • Build a community. Look inside and outside your organization for enthusiastic, imaginative thinkers. Use your network to recruit people to your team, brainstorm ideas, test prototypes, and critique results.

  • Experiment. Don’t put all your eggs into one basket. When you come up with an interesting idea, test it on a small scale first. Encourage lots of experiments to find one or two that produce excellent results.

  • Tell stories. Charts and data aren’t very inspiring. To get creative juices flowing, share stories about people and problems. Find out what your customers want and what solutions would make them smile. Recount flashes of genius from the past. You’ll get people thinking about the possibilities instead of the obstacles.

MEMBERS BEWARE OF PHISHING SCAM RELATED TO W-2S

The scam typically goes like this: The accounting department gets an email from the CEO asking that all of the employees’ payroll information be emailed to him. As instructed, they comply and then discover that the email was a phony. Now, all of the personal information in the payroll including addresses and social security numbers is in the hands of the identity thieves. This scam is a relative of the earlier one where the email directs the accounting department to send a wire transfer to a foreign bank. It’s more serious because the wire transfer request was unusual enough to set off alarm bells. This version sounds routine and may be acted upon without thought.

Click here for announcements and explanations of various types of scams that are going around now.
