Dear Member, here is your weekly e-flash!

PIASC MEMBERS… ARE YOU TAKING ADVANTAGE OF DISCOUNTS ON SERVICES YOU USE MOST?

PIASC is conducting a direct mail campaign to attract more members to your Association, using the image and message above. The first postcard was mailed in mid-May to approximately 700 possible members. Obviously, the postcard was not mailed to members; however, we are taking advantage of the message—as a reminder to you—of the numerous discounts you can access through your membership with PIASC.

We encourage you to take advantage and profit from discounts on services you use most and see how quickly membership pays for itself!

Whether you need shipping, background checks or stock photos, you can save by using our Buying Power Partners. You don’t have anything to lose but have much to save! Following are some of the Buying Power Partners you may want to consider using if you are not already doing so.

Remember that your membership pays for itself—if you take advantage of your benefits.

Refer a friend and earn a $100 credit towards your membership dues. Click here for more information.

THE SWITCH AWAY FROM "ONLINE ONLY"

It has become apparent to many companies that an “all-digital” marketing or publishing strategy doesn’t always work. Hence we’re seeing more and more e-commerce companies mailing print catalogs, and more digital publications launching print editions. THE CALIFORNIA MINIMUM WAGE AND PAID SICK LEAVE BY JURISDICTION MADE EASY WITH A CHART PREPARED FOR MEMBERS

The federal minimum wage has not been raised since 2009. Consequently, many states have taken action and raised the minimum wage above the federal level.

Currently 29 states, including California ($10 per hour) have minimum wages above the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. Moreover, before 2012 only five localities had minimum wage laws. Today 34 counties and cities do, half of which are in California.

To help members, Printing Industries of California (PIC) created an easy-to-read chart and is maintaining an up-to-date inventory of these laws, with scheduled increases—as well as local paid sick leave ordinances which are more liberal than the state policy—with links to notices and postings. Click here for a copy of the California Minimum Wage and Paid Sick Leave by Jurisdiction.

ROOT OUT THESE ACCOUNTABILITY KILLERS

Management is about accountability—yours and the people who work for you. Beware of these behaviors that can undercut your attempt to build a culture of accountability in your workplace:

  • Tardiness. Everyone is late once or twice, but when you or your employees make it a habit, lateness can take root in your workplace, leading to missed deadlines and wasted time.

  • Scapegoating. If your first move is to punish mistakes and failures, employees will spend most of the time trying to avoid responsibility instead of solving problems.

  • Breaking promises. Don’t tell employees you’ll do something if you don’t mean it. If you start making excuses for failure to follow through, they’ll do the same.

  • Deflecting mistakes. If you make a mistake, admit it honestly. Employees won’t cease to respect you for not being perfect, but they will pick up on any reluctance to concede an error or cover one up.

  • Ignoring misbehavior. You expect a certain level of performance and professional behavior from your workforce. If you let some employees get away with substandard work or childish behavior because they’re productive in some areas, or you just want to avoid open conflict, you send a message that you don’t care what they do on the job. Take corrective action whenever you see behavior that calls for it.
